Thuya Burl 101: Everything Woodturners Need to Know About This Moroccan Treasure
Thuya Burl has a story as rich as its grain. The ancient Greeks named this Moroccan wood "Thuya," which also means sacrifice — they burned its aromatic oil as incense in religious ceremonies. Today, woodturners prize it for an entirely different reason: those dense, swirling "eyes" that make every blank look like nothing else in your shop.
Where Thuya Burl Comes From
Thuya Burl is harvested from the root burl of the Thuya tree, native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. It's genuinely rare outside of Morocco, which is part of why it commands a premium price and why turners who work with it tend to become repeat customers.
Color, Grain & Hardness
Expect coloring that ranges from golden brown to dark black, with small, dense burl eyes scattered through a swirling grain pattern. It has a Janka hardness of 1,160 lbf (5,140 N) — solidly dense but more forgiving on tools than some of the harder exotics like Ironwood or Katalox. Moisture content typically runs 12–18%, and our blanks are air-dried before they ship.

Working & Finishing Tips
Thuya Burl turns cleanly with sharp tools and takes a wide range of finishes well. Its natural fragrance (that same aromatic quality the Greeks valued) is a nice bonus while you're at the lathe. A CA finish or wipe-on oil brings out the depth of the burl eyes without overpowering the natural color variation.
